Ellis Island is located next to Liberty Island, home to the Statue of Liberty. A total of around 12 million people who immigrated into the USA were inspected at Ellis Island since 1892.
Most of the immigrants were European. Upon arrival at Ellis island, doctors conducted a 6-second medical check, followed by a legal inspection. 20% were held back for further medical or legal examination. They were detained, hospitalized or appealed.
Only about 2% were denied entry. One third stayed in New York City; others headed elsewhere. Associations which supported new immigrants welcomed new people. Since then, the US consulates assumed this responsibility instead. In 1954, the Ellis Island facility closed down permanently.
It might be because of my profession, but a tour of the Ellis Island was worth as much as or more than the Liberty Island with the Statue of Liberty. Ellis Island is a highly recommended spot to visit if you are interested in.
